Band Director

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Direct and manage the overall band program. Assumes professional responsibility for providing learning experiences in music and supervise of students in a supportive and positive climate that develops in each student the skills, attitudes, and knowledge to meet and exceed the Texas Christian Athletic League (TCAL) and district requirements, using approved curricula, materials, and directives of the school.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
       Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
             Valid Texas teaching certificate
             
Special Knowledge/Skills:  
  • Knowledge of overall operation of the 6-12th grade band program.
  • Excellent experience in teaching and working with students.
  • Understanding of pedagogy and performance ability of all common band instruments, including, but not limited to, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn in F, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion.
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel.
  • Knowledge and ability to interpret state, TCAL and district policies and procedures and data.
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills. Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
  • Assumes professional responsibility for providing learning experiences in music and supervision of students in a supportive and positive climate that develops in each student the skills, attitudes, and knowledge to meet and exceed the TCAL and district requirements, using approved curricula, materials, and directives of the school.
  • Exceptional performance ability on one or more instruments.

             Three years demonstrated success in teaching and music/band experience

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
A music teacher teaches the basic principles of music to beginners and higher nuances of music to those that have already acquired knowledge of basics of music.
 
  1. Teaches individuals and/or groups instrumental music in a public charter school.
  2. Plans daily classroom work based on teaching outline prepared for course of study to meet curriculum requirements.
  3. Preparing students to participate in music competitions, such as the TCAL Fine Arts State Competition.
  4. Evaluates students' interests, aptitudes, temperament, and individual characteristics to determine suitable instrument for beginner.
  5. Sings or plays instrument to model musical scales, tones, and rhythm.
  6. Instructs students in music theory, harmony, score and sight reading, composition, music appreciation, and provides individual or group vocal and instrumental lessons using technical knowledge, aesthetic appreciation, and prescribed teaching techniques.
  7. Provide for band participation at extracurricular events including concerts, athletic events, pep rallies, parades, and TCAL activities.
  8. Conducts the High School Symphonic Band and 8th, 7th, and 6th grade concert bands, which participate in periodic concerts, competitions, and community functions. 
  9. Lead and continue to grow the Eagle Pep Band, building to the future creation of a Marching Band program. This ensemble successfully participates in periodic concerts, pep rallies, athletic events, parades, competitions, and community functions.
  10. Design and implement a Jazz Band program, which successfully participates in periodic concerts, competitions, and community functions. Director understands the pedagogy of and can comfortably teach jazz-specific instruments, such as guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, and drum set.
  11. Assists with the high school Mariachi Band. Understand and instruct (or be willing to learn!) mariachi-specific instruments, such as violin, trumpet, guitar, vihuela, and guitarron.
  12. Conducts group rehearsals and instructs and coaches members in their individual parts, fundamentals of musicianship, and ensemble performance.
  13. Critiques performance to identify errors and reinforce correct techniques, leading to greater student understanding.
  14. Leads groups in regular and special performances for school program, concerts, or other functions.
  15. Use critical thinking, decision-making, problem-solving, and self-management skills
  16. Adhere to current safety standards.
  17. Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within the department.
  18. Meets with parents of student to resolve student problems.
  19. Accompany students on field trips to musical performances, if necessary
  20. Order, store, and inventory musical instruments, music, and supplies.
  21. Teach students with disabilities and adhere to all special education state standards
  22. Maintain and organize inventory, including all musical instruments, classroom equipment, and music library.
  23. Keep instruments in proper working order throughout the school year, and maintain annual summertime instrument repairs with local music stores/ repair shops
  24. Recommend budget needs to the Campus Director or designated supervisor.
  25. Serve as a role model for students by cultivating personal musical talents and creating or performing music.
  26. Engage the learners in differentiated learning experiences for the range of skill levels and developmental needs found in the classroom, managing, when appropriate, multiple instructional activities simultaneously.
  27. Organize and supervise approved field trips to enhance classroom learning.
  28. Monitor the pacing of instruction and budget class time efficiently by providing clear directions, outlining expectations and effectively bringing to closure instructional experiences.
  29. Submit lesson plans in the approved format to the Campus Director or designated supervisor as required and requested.
  30. Use effective presentation skills when employing direct instruction, including appropriate vocabulary and examples, clear and legible visuals, and articulate and audible speech.
  31. Use excellent written and oral English skills when communicating with students, parents, and colleagues.
  32. Provide a nurturing, supportive, and positive classroom climate that encourages student responsibility, using positive motivation, clear classroom routines, challenging instructional strategies, and effective classroom management techniques.
  33. Discipline students in a fair and consistent manner, using school approved procedures. Seek assistance of the parents and the Campus Director or designated supervisor as needed.
  34. Establish a professional rapport with students that earns their respect.
  35. Communicate regularly with parents, seeking their support and advice, so as to create a cooperative relationship to support the child in the school.
  36. Assess and interpret the social needs, emotional needs and learning styles of students, using a variety of assessment techniques and data.
  37. Plan and adjust teaching methods accordingly, requesting advice and assistance from specialists when appropriate.
  38. Assist with the preparation, monitoring, and implementation of Individualized Education Plans or selected students assigned to the class.
  39. Employ a variety of methods for students to demonstrate learning and accomplishments.
  40. Evaluate and grade homework, assignments, and tests in a timely fashion, providing feedback to the student on performance.
  41. Maintain records and provide evidence of growth and progress to parents and to students.
  42. Ensure the safety and health of all students, notifying the administration of any unsafe conditions, following established procedures.
  43. Create a stimulating, attractive, organized, functional, healthy, and safe classroom, with proper attention to the visual, acoustic, and thermal environments.
  44. Complete in a timely fashion all records and reports as required by law and regulation or requested by the Campus Director or designated supervisor. Maintain accurate attendance records.
  45. Account for all funds collected from students.
  46. Work cooperatively with adults assigned to the classroom (e.g., paraprofessionals, student teachers, parents, and volunteers), establishing clear expectations for roles and responsibilities.
  47. Recommend to the Campus Director or designated supervisor the supplies and equipment needed to support instruction and assist with ordering, following established procedures and budgetary allotment.
  48. Maintain in safe working condition and safely operate electronic and other equipment needed to carry out job functions and responsibilities.
  49. Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.
  50. Perform other duties as assigned.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
Equipment Used:
Computer with appropriate software, printer, calculator, copier, facsimile machine, overhead projector, and other specialized equipment that is particularly unique to the teaching assignment.
Mental Demands:
Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret policy, procedures, and data; maintain emotional control under stress.

ABOUT BOB HOPE SCHOOL
Bob Hope School is a growing open-enrollment public charter school (non-profit) providing parents a choice in their child's education. Bob Hope Elementary is a Montessori / Dual-Language campus. Instruction is conducted in a two-way immersion program, where teachers fluent in English teach ELA and those fluent in Spanish teach SLA and are supported by teacher aides with a strong command of both languages.
